Introduction to Chess - All Ages

Schweitzer Brentwood Library / The Library Center - 6 pm Mondays (alternating locations)


A course for beginners and novices. The class is designed for players new to chess and those who are returning to the game and need a refresher on the basics. We start with piece movement -- board setup and how each piece moves -- and incorporate rules discussions as we progress. Basic strategies for opening play are explained with group exercises and examples. Lessons are reinforced through supervised practice after the group discussions.

Winning Strategies and Tactics - All Ages

A variety of tactics are taught for gaining advantages during the course of a game. Pins, double attacks, discovered attacks, removing the guard, mating threats, and traps are studied and discussed. Emphasis is on the principles involved and application to game situations. Examples are shared and discussed with one-on-one practice to reinforce the concepts.
